Phonetic Alphabet

The phonetic alphabet assigns code words to the letters of the English alphabet acrophonically so that critical combinations of letters (and numbers) can be pronounced and understood by those who transmit and receive voice messages by vox regardless of their native language, especially when the safety of navigation or persons is essential. The paramount reason is to ensure intelligibility of voice signals over vox links.

A B C D E F G H
Alfa Bravo Charlie Delta/Dixie Echo Foxtrot Golf Hotel
I J K L M N O P
India Juliet Kilo Lima Mike November Oscar Papa
Q R S T U V W X
Quebec Romeo Sierra Tango Uniform Victor Whiskey X-ray
Y Z 0 1 2 3 4 5
Yankee Zulu Zee-Row Won Too Tree Fow-er Fife
6 7 8 9
Six Sev-En Ate Niner

Of course, this is the standard NATO international radio-telephony spelling alphabet from Allied Tactical Publication ATP-1, Volume II: Allied Maritime Signal and Maneuvering Book used by all allied navies in NATO, which adopted a modified form of the International Code of Signals as anyone who served in a western military will no doubt recognize.
