Ansata Description Interstellar terrorist organization founded by Lyril Finn on Rutia IV in 2314 for the avowed purpose of overthrowing the government of Rutia IV and exterminating those Rutians who do not follow the True Faith. Made up of various functional committees, including political, military, and financial. On June 5, 2366 (SD 43510.2), Ansata leader Kyril FInn was killed by Rutian commandoes. The raid, launched to free several StarFleet officers taken hostage by the Ansata killed most of the existing leadership of this terror group; the new leadership of the organization is unclear. Activities Has carried out terrorist attacks on 20 planets, killing or injuring almost 9000 persons. Targets include the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the Orion Colonies, and various non-Aligned planets. Major attacks included the New Rome and Astrovenna starports in December 2345, the Neve Shalom synagogue in New Athens and the PanFed Flight 73 hijacking in September 2366, and the City of Stavros day-excursion ship attack in in July 2358. Suspected of assassinating Andorian deputy chief of defense Alaruu Dyan and Coridanian security chief Aaron Hull on DS 5 in January 2361. Has not staged a major attack since the death of Finn. Strength Few tens of thousands plus limited interstellar support structure. Location/Area of Operation Has an operational presence on Rutia IV including in several refugee camps. Authorities shut down the Ansata's operations in the Orion Colonies and the Outrim in 2361. Has demonstrated ability to operate over wide area, including the Rutia, the Orion Colonies, and across the Outrim. Financial problems and the current leadership crisis have reduced the group's activities and capabilities. External Aid Has received considerable support, including safe haven, training, logistic assistance, and financial aid from the Romulan Empire, the Cardassian Union, and the Klingon Empire (until 2357), in addition to close support for selected operations. (N.B. The Ansata are based closely on Islamic Jihad, and Roddenberry's sympathetic treatment of them belies his own pro-terrorist and anti-Semitic biases. The word 'ansata' means Handle or Lever in Arabic. One would assume that the Ansata saw itself as the 'lever' that would expel the Rutian 'Jews' from half of their world) |
