Star Trek Chronology

(originally researched by Andrew Gelbman and Nick Bauer c. 1983)

A college friend and I grabbed all our Trek manuals, the concordance and the novelizations of the movies and figured this timeline using the theory of stardates given on this site. Our chronology differs on a few points with Michael and Denise Okuda's official Chronology but we believed then (and now) that it remains truer to the classic Trek canon.

Our conclusions differ with the Okudas' mainly what the dates of the significant events of the Classic Era are. The Okudas assumed that each event took place exactly 300 years from its original air date (or release date, in the case of the movies). Jason and I calculated the dates from the stardates given in the various episodes - we felt that the stardate had to have real significance. We assumed that classic era stardates refer solely to shipboard time and are not an independent calendar. Therefore it is necessary to know which ship is in question, when she left her home port on the current mission and which mission is in question in order to translate a stardate into a calendar date (this has the added bonus of squaring with Gene Roddenberry's own, admittedly off-the-cuff, explanation of stardates)

Dates in the 24th century where also computed directly off the stardates given on air with the assumption that Stardate 00000.00 was 1 January 2323 and that from that point on, stardates represent an actual calendar.
